Modern Software Experience

2008-12-10

GenSoftReviews

A little less than three months ago, Louis Kessler replaced his list of genealogy software with the GenSoftReviews site. Back then, the site was empty.

Today, the GenSoftReviews now has 298 reviews on 381 programs. Many of those program remain unreviewed, many programs that do have a review have only one yet. The reviews are all very brief, and the bulk of the reviews covers the most popular programs.
Louis Kessler’s Behold itself has just one review yet.

overall rating

If you sort the programs by their overall rating and then ignore the programs that have less than five reviews, you get a list of the most-reviewed ordered by overall rating.
The most reviewed programs, from highest to lowest overall rating are:

  1. Reunion
  2. Second Site for TMG
  3. RootsMagic
  4. Brother’s Keeper
  5. The Next Generation of Genealogy Site Building (TNG)
  6. Genbox Family History
  7. dynastree
  8. Legacy
  9. Personal Ancestral File (PAF)
  10. Ancestral Quest
  11. MyHeritage Family Tree Builder
  12. GenoPro
  13. The Master Genealogist (TMG)
  14. Family Tree Maker up to version 16
  15. Family Tree Maker 2008 and later
  16. Clooz.

That is not exactly the order in which I would put these programs, and probably not yours either, but it certainly isn’t an entirely insensible one. This is the wisdom of the crowd.

The high rating of RootsMagic or the low rating of Family Tree Maker does not surprise. That Second Site is rated so much higher than TMG itself is noteworthy but not unexpected. What intrigues me most about this particular order is that Ancestral Quest is listed below PAF, that is just odd. After all, PAF can be thought of as Ancestral Quest Lite, and PAF has not seen an update or even a patch in years.

GenSmarts

Before I congratulate the makers of the highest rated programs on that list, a special mention of GenSmarts. GenSmarts did pretty well on GenSoftReviews too, but had just four reviews, and I had to draw a line somewhere. I really wanted to draw the line at ten or more, but then there really are not enough reviews to do so yet. I drew the line at five reviews, but if I had drawn it at four reviews, GenSmarts would have been third on the list.

congratulations

Congratulations to Leister Productions (Reunion), John Cardinal (Second Site) and RootsMagic (RootsMagic) for having such satisfied users.
