Genealogy Blog Awards 2012

GeneaBlog Award

2012

These are the fifth GeneaBlog Awards already. This year's GeneaBlog Awards are presented earlier than in previous years. I have been thinking about moving it forward for some time now, for the simple reason that December is busy enough already.
There's no doubt in my mind that these winners represent the very best genealogy blogging of 2012, but I'd love to be proven wrong; more great genealogy blogs is a Good Thing.

Best New Genealogy Technology Blog: AQ Will do

I'm always looking for genealogy technology blogs. This year's Best New Genealogy Technology Blog 2012 is Dale McIntyre's AQ Will do. Started in August of this year, it immediately caught my attention with its unique subject and voice. AQ Will do is all about Ancestral Quest (AQ), a commercial product of Incline Software. Most product-specific blogs are by vendors, and there are few third-party product-specific blogs that aren't, to put it mildly, on some marketing mission. Refreshling, AQ Will do is a nuts & bolts blog, written by someone who teaches Ancestral Quest classes, and simply has more to teach.
This blog will help you get the most out of AQ; it highlights what AQ can do and how to do it, and does so in remarkable detail. If you are using Ancestral Quest or PAF, AQ Will do is a must-follow blog.

Best In-Depth Industry Coverage: AncestryDNA coverage on Your Genetic Genealogist

This year, Ancestry.com started offering autosomal DNA tests through their AncestryDNA service, at relatively affordable prices. No one has covered this industry development more extensively than CeCe Moore on her Your Genetic Genealogist blog.
In fact, her coverage starts late last year, well before the Beta period. She was the first to point out that AncestryDNA may be cheap, but does not provide you with your own data, an important issue many other authors missed completely. She has consistently taken the position that Ancestry.com should release the actual test results to their customers.
Your Genetic Genealogist was the first to report that Ancestry.com had bought GeneTree.
CeCe Moore exclusively reported on erroneous results by AncestryDNA, provided follow-up explaining what went wrong, and did not hesitate to report an AncestryDNA success story later.

Your Genetic Genealogist has regularly provided AncestryDNA information while misinformation abounded. There is no better source of independent information on AncestryDNA.

Most Pronounced Genealogy Activism: SSDI Coverage on the The Legal Genealogist

The Legal Genealogist has written much about plans to limit public access to the U.S.A. Social Security Death Index (SSDI), and the Records Preservation & Access Committee's Stop ID Theft NOW! campaign. The Legal Genealogist did not for a moment pretend to be an objective reporter, but emerged as The SSDI Activist, not just calling on genealogists to sign petitions, but even went so far as to declare Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, to be Genealogy’s Public Enemy No. 1.

Best Guest Series: DNA Testing for Genealogy on the Geni blog

CeCe Moore, author of the Your Genetic Genealogist blog, did a guest series on the Geni blog.
It is not known whether this guest series signals an intention on Geni's part to become active in DNA testing, but it is a solid introduction the three basic types of DNA tests and their uses.

Best Uniquely Informative Series: Terms of Service on The Legal Genealogist

The Legal Genealogists is a genealogy blog with a legal attitude.
Judy Russel started a series of informative posts about the Terms of Service (ToS) of various genealogy record providers. These blog posts did not only prove informative to readers, but were instrumental in getting vendors to make changes to their ToS as well.

Apropos, The Legal Genealogists was started on 2012 Jan 1, and I have no hesitation in calling it the Best New Genealogy Blog of 2012.
