Near the end 2006, I did a brief piece on the best of worst of genealogy for that year. I wanted it to be more, and by the end of 2007, it had become the GeneAwards 2007, highlighting the best and worst genealogy products, companies and services. I had even added a Special Award to highlight things that did not fit the regular Best and Worst mold. That was more like I originally envisioned it, but one thing was still missing: an actual award graphic for the winner to display.
The design is a circular plague that combines gold and copper colours for a striking effect.
In the centre is a heraldic rose; five symmetrical lobes alternating with barbs, with a circular stem in its centre.
A laurel wreath, symbol of victory and leadership, embraces the rose.
Along the top is the year. More text is not necessary. There is no need for the award to carry the text "GeneAward". The strong and easily recognisable visual design is sufficient identity already. There is also the context in which it is used and the link back to the GeneAward page.
The colour of the rose signifies the award category.
The a gold-coloured rose does not stand for any specific category. This design represents the award itself.
The Red Rose is for the Best Genealogy Product of Year. This product leads by example.
The White Rose is for the best new product or service. There is a lot of new software out there, and this award exists to highlight the best newcomer.
This organisation did something really good for genealogy.
This new organisation really stood out.
Some things do not fit the predefined categories, yet deserve to be recognised by an award.
This design is not just for 2008. The winners of best of 2007 now have an award graphic.
